If your MINI Cooper’s check engine light is flashing, do not drive your automobile. This is a sign that there is a serious problem with the engine. If the light turns on and remains steady, MMS Automotive advises that there is an issue with your engine that needs to be addressed as soon as possible to avoid damaging it further. We are going to list the common reasons for a check engine warning below.
Clogged Catalytic Converter
The catalytic converter is part of your MINI’s exhaust system. It lasts, on average, about 10 years. If your automobile is older than this and you smell rotten eggs in your vehicle’s exhaust, the catalytic converter is clogged. This will turn on the check engine light.
Dirty Mass Airflow Sensor
The mass airflow sensor is located behind the air filter. As such, it can get dirty over time. When it gets dirty, it often malfunctions. Consequently, you will end up with the check engine warning and engine performance issues.
Engine Vacuum Leak
An engine vacuum leak also causes engine performance issues such as sputtering at high speeds. You may be able to hear the vacuum leak if you hear hissing sounds coming from your MINI’s engine. The vacuum leak will also turn on the check engine light.
Faulty EVAP System or Gas Cap
The EVAP system and gas cap are designed to seal off your vehicle’s fuel system and tank, respectively, to prevent diesel fuel or gasoline from evaporating into the environment. Problems with the EVAP system or a loose gas cap will turn on the check engine light.
Malfunctioning Engine Control Unit
The engine control unit is your MINI’s main computer chip. Rarely does this chip malfunction, but when it does, it may cut your MINI’s engine and you won’t be able to get it restarted. You will also end up with a check engine warning.
Malfunctioning Oxygen Sensor
The oxygen sensor lasts about 100,000 miles. Some sensors fail sooner than this. Once your oxygen sensor goes bad, your check engine light will come on and you may have problems such as black exhaust smoke, poor fuel economy, and a surging engine.
Misfiring Spark Plugs
If the spark plugs are misfiring, it could be because they are worn or because the engine control unit is not firing them in the correct order. Either instance will cause the check engine light to come on.
Transmission Problems
Finally, transmission problems can also give you a check engine dashboard warning. Alongside the illuminated light, you may have problems with your MINI’s gears shifting properly.
