Why Is My BMW’s Air Conditioner Blowing Hot Air?

It may be the holiday season, but it’s still pretty warm in Southern California. As such, you may find yourself turning on your BMW’s air conditioner in the afternoon. Imagine that you do, and there is hot air blowing out of the vents. What could possibly be wrong? MMS Automotive will explain the common problems car air conditioners face below. Don’t worry. We can fix your BMW’s AC.

Damaged Condenser

Many times, when the air conditioner isn’t working it’s because the condenser has been damaged. It’s easy for the condenser to get damaged because of where it is located in your BMW’s engine. You will find the air conditioning condenser directly behind the vehicle’s grille. As such, the condenser is often pelted by rocks and other road debris. This debris cannot only clog the condenser but also damage it. You won’t get cold air with a damaged condenser.

Dead Compressor

Another common problem that prevents the air conditioner from generating cold air is a dead compressor. The air conditioning compressor is like a triathlete. It likes to work, and it gets plenty of work during the summer. You don’t need your BMW’s air conditioner in the winter and, as a consequence, it may malfunction because it isn’t being used. To prevent this from happening, run your AC once a month for 15 minutes every month.

Low Refrigerant Levels

Another problem that might cause warm air to blow out of your BMW’s vents is low refrigerant levels. If it has been years since you have had the air conditioner serviced, or if you have never had it serviced, the refrigerant levels have been reduced by time. Your air conditioner’s refrigerant comes in two forms, gas that is converted into liquid and then back to gas. When it is in its liquid form, it can leak out of the hose connectors. It can also evaporate naturally.

Malfunctioning Fan

As an aside, you may not have any air blowing out of your vents if the air conditioner fan is malfunctioning. This can be caused by a faulty fan or by an electrical problem in your BMW’s air conditioning system. Unfortunately, you will not get any air blowing through the vents until you get the fan fixed. This, obviously, prevents the cold air from blowing through the vents to increase the comfort level inside the vehicle’s cabin.
