Taking care of your MINI Cooper includes taking care of the exhaust system. MMS Automotive can help with all of your MINI Cooper’s maintenance and repair needs. We’d be happy to inspect your exhaust system if you notice any of the following problems listed below. These are signs that the exhaust system is suffering from clogs or leaks.
A Very Noisy Engine
One thing that can cause an exhaust leak is a cracked manifold gasket. When this happens, you may end up hearing hissing or even tapping sounds coming from the engine. These sounds will be loud and annoying, to say the least. They will also be very evident when you first fire up the MINI. Another reason why you might hear loud sounds coming from your MINI is if you have a damaged muffler.
Acceleration/Power Loss
Leaking exhaust gases can fill the engine and cause acceleration and power loss. Unfortunately, you will continue to suffer from the power loss until you have the exhaust leak fixed.
Clogs in the exhaust system can also create engine performance issues. If the exhaust cannot pass through the system and out of the tailpipe, it will affect the combustion chamber’s performance.
Engine Bay Burning Odors
You might also smell very hot odors if your exhaust system is leaking. Generally, the leak comes from the manifold gasket and the exhaust is so hot that it can actually melt any plastic that is in the engine. It can also melt the electrical wiring insulation. When you have hot exhaust flowing into the engine, you will end up smelling things burning in your engine.
Gas/Diesel Fuel Odors
Another smell you might come across is gasoline or diesel fuel odors. If you can smell the fuel in your passenger cabin, it might not be safe to continue driving your automobile. First of all, you need to be concerned about inhaling the carbon monoxide in the fuel fumes. Secondly, this could be a sign of an exhaust system leak or a fuel leak.
Hanging/Damaged Tailpipe
You might be able to see that your MINI Cooper has an exhaust system problem if the tailpipe is hanging too low. The tailpipe can also show visible signs of damage such as holes or pits. You might accidentally damage the tailpipe yourself if you drive over a large bump too fast.
Reduced Fuel Efficiency
Finally, all of these things can reduce your MINI Cooper’s fuel efficiency. You may find yourself unwillingly heading to the service station more often than you used to.
