If you have over 100,000 miles on your BMW, there will be a time sooner rather than later that the fuel pump goes bad. Don’t worry. MMS Automotive can replace the fuel pump when it needs it. The following problems are signs that the fuel pump is going bad in your BMW.
High-Speed Engine Sputtering
When you put the pedal to the metal, the BMW’s engine needs more fuel to increase its speed. If it doesn’t get the extra fuel, the engine will sputter. This sputtering is a sign that the fuel pump is malfunctioning because it did not send extra fuel to the BMW’s engine.
Loss of Engine Power When Stressed
The BMW’s engine may also lose power under stressful conditions because, again, it needs extra fuel to maintain the speed at which you are driving. For example, your BMW should not lose excessive power when you drive up steep hills. If it does, the fuel pump is malfunctioning.
Unusual Spurts of Increased Speed
Another sign that the fuel pump is malfunctioning is unusual surges of speed. This suggests that the faulty fuel pump is sending too much fuel to the engine in spurts. The engine will pick up speed at each spurt of fuel. This makes controlling your BMW difficult.
A Reduction in the Fuel Economy
All of these things will cause your BMW to see a reduction in its gas mileage. Unfortunately, when the fuel pump is not supplying the engine with the fuel it needs when it needs it, the engine will run inefficiently. This inefficiency reduces the fuel economy.
A Reduction in the Fuel Pressure
Your BMW’s fuel pressure will also be affected by the dying fuel pump. As with the fuel economy, the fuel pressure will see a serious reduction. In fact, the reduced fuel pressure is one of the reasons why the engine struggles to run at high speeds or when under stress.
Rising Engine Temperatures
An odd sign that the fuel pump is going bad is a rising engine temperature. This can be an indication that the fuel pump motor is overheating. If the fuel pump is unable to draw enough fuel out of the tank to cool off the motor, it will get too hot and transfer this heat to the engine.
Finally, MMS Automotive in South Bay, CA, advises that there may come a point when you will be unable to get your BMW started because the fuel pump can no longer push fuel into the engine. Give us a call at the first sign of trouble to avoid this.
