Signs it’s Time for a New Water Pump in My Mercedes-Benz

You can count on MMS Automotive when it is time to install a new water pump into your Mercedes-Benz. If the odometer on the Benz has turned 100,000 miles, the water pump is reaching the end of its life. In most cases, this equates to about 10 years of service. If you drive an older Mercedes, pop the hood when the engine is cold and inspect the water pump. This can clue you in to the need for a new one.

Corrosion on the Mercedes’ Pump

For example, if you see corrosion on the water pump, it has started to leak the engine’s coolant. Unfortunately, there is no way to repair this small leak. Rather, the coolant will continue to puddle around the water pump and corrode it. Eventually, this corrosion will start to feed off the metal out of which the pump is made. This will lead to…

Coolant Leaking on the Garage Floor

The slow leak discussed above may not affect the engine temperature because there is still plenty of coolant circulating through the engine. Once the coolant starts to leak on the garage floor, you will notice that your Mercedes will run hotter than it normally does. It’s important that you avoid driving the Mercedes when the coolant is leaking onto the garage floor. You could damage the engine.

Reduction in the Coolant’s Circulation

It may be that the water pump in your Mercedes will never spring a leak. Rather, it will wear out and there will be a reduction in the coolant circulation in the engine. If the coolant is not circulating through the engine at the normal volume and pressure, you are going to end up with an overheating engine. In fact, an overheating engine is a result of a malfunctioning water pump no matter the malfunction.

Grinding Noises at the Engine’s Front

You may be able to pinpoint the overheating problem to the water pump if you hear grinding coming from the front of your Mercedes’ engine. The water pump will make this noise because it is wearing out. In some cases, the grinding may also sound like growling.

The Mercedes Overheats All the Time

Finally, as we mentioned above, your Mercedes is going to overheat if the water pump is malfunctioning. If you continue to drive the luxury automobile, you run the risk of causing severe engine damage such as a cracked engine block or head gasket.
